Syria measures 71,498.4 sq. miles, slightly larger than North Dakota. This includes 500 sq. miles of Israeli occupied territory.

Syria’s population in 2006 was about 18,881, 361 with 90.3% Arabs. Sunni Muslims comprised 74% of the people. The Alawites, a religious group that broke away from Shiite Islam in the 9th century, numbered about 1.7 million and comprised about 15% of Syria’s population. Pres. Hafez Assad was a member of the sect.
