Two years later the state Supreme Court revisited the case and in a new trial he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. In 2012 the US Supreme Court decided Miller v. Alabama, in which the Court held that mandatory sentencing schemes requiring children convicted of homicide to be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole violate the Eighth Amendment. Four men were convicted. In 1999 Bill Lee, a former gang member, published "Chinese Playground," a memoir of his experiences in the 60s and 70s. Assailant Curtis Tam was released in 1991 after he testified against two others. In 2015 assailant Melvin Yu was paroled. Peter Ng remained in prison in Vacaville. In New Jersey 5 teenage boys disappeared. In 2010 Lee Evans (56) and Philander Hampton (53) were arrested and charged with their murder. Prosecutors said the boys were herded into an abandoned building and burned to death in a dispute over some missing marijuana. On Aug 20, 2010, Evans was freed from jail after relatives put up $950,000 in bail. His cousin remained in jail. On Oct 3, 2011, Hampton (54) was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Under sentencing guidelines he was only required to serve 20% of the sentence. In 2011 a jury found Lee Evans not guilty of 10-murder related counts in the deaths of the teens. In Milpitas, Ca., Anthony Jacques Broussard, a high school student (16), strangled and killed Marcy Conrad, his girl friend (14), dumped her body on a river bank and gave tours to his friends, who never reported the crime. The 1986 film "River's Edge" was later made based on the murder. On December 3, 1982 Broussard was sentenced in a San Jose, California court to 25 years to life for the strangulation death of Conrad. Rich Skrenta (b.1967), a freshman in Pennsylvania, developed Elk Cloner as a practical joke. It was the 1st virus to hit computers worldwide and later became known as a "boot sector" virus. When it boots, or starts up, an infected disk places a copy of the virus in the computer's memory. Whenever someone inserts a clean disk into the machine and types the command "catalog" for a list of files, a copy gets written onto that disk as well. Dorka Lisker (66) was stabbed to death at her Sherman Oaks, Ca., home. Her son Bruce, age 17 at the time of the murder, was convicted of her murder in 1985 and was sentenced to life in prison. In 2009 he was freed on bail after a judge overturned his conviction due to false evidence and sloppy defense work. Prosecutors decided not to retry him. DeWitt Duckett (14) was shot in the neck inside Harlem Park Junior High in Baltimore. Authorities later said he was killed over his Georgetown University Starter jacket. Police soon arrested 16-year-olds Alfred Chestnut, Ransom Watkins, and Andrew Stewart, charging them with murder. Witnesses later recanted and it emerged that police withheld exculpatory evidence, including that several other students identified another man as Duckett's killer. He died in 2002. In Warwick, RI, Craig Price (13) crept across his neighbor's yard, broke into a little brown house on Inez Avenue and stabbed Rebecca Spencer 58 times. She was a 27-year-old mother of two. On Sep 1, 1989, he butchered Joan Heaton (39) with kitchen knives she had bought earlier that day. The bodies of her daughters, Jennifer 10, and Melissa 8, were found in pools of blood, pieces of knives broken off in their bones; Jennifer had been stabbed 62 times. Price was scheduled to be released in 1994 but was sentenced to 15 years, seven to serve and eight suspended, following contempt charges and belligerent statements. In London, England, Stephen Lawrence (b.1974), a black teenager of Jamaican parentage, was brutally killed by a gang of white youths with a history of race baiting. 5 youths were identified, but none were prosecuted. Three of the suspects were acquitted in 1996. In 1999 a play called "The Color of Justice" was made based on the testimony of the trial. The 1999 Macpherson inquiry concluded that the police force’s mishandling of the case betrayed “institutional racism.” In 2000 police arrested 3 men in connection with the killing. In 2002 two of those accused in the Lawrence case, David Norris and Neil Acourt, were convicted and jailed for a racist attack on a black police officer. In 2011 Gary Dobson (36) and David Norris (35) both white men from south London, faced trial for murder. On Jan 3, 2012, Dobson and Norris were found guilty. In West Memphis, Arkansas, Cub Scouts Steve Branch (8), Christopher Byers (8) and Michael Moore (8) were found dead, nude and hogtied. Rumors of Satanism roiled the community in the weeks following their deaths. In 1994 Jason Baldwin (16) was sentenced to life in prison; Jessie Misskelley (18) was sentenced to life plus 40 years; Damien Echols (19) was sentenced to death. The case was largely based on a confession by Misskelley, who was mentally handicapped. In 1996 Jo Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky made an HBO documentary: "The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills." Eddie Polec (16), a Fox Chase high school student, died after being clubbed to death by students of Abington High School. On March 20, 1996, Carlo Johnson (20) and Bou Khathavong (18) – believed by prosecutors to be the ring leaders in the assault, although neither beat Polec – received maximum five- to 10-year sentences for conspiracy. Prosecutors believe the two organized the rumble and provided the baseball bats. Anthony Rienzi and Nick Pinero, both 18, were sentenced to the maximum 15- to 30-year terms for third-degree murder and conspiracy. Thomas Crook (19) sobbed and apologized to his family before receiving 14.5 years to 30 years on the same charges. Dawan Alexander (18) who was convicted of manslaughter for kicking Polec, received an eight- to 20-year term. Seventh defendant Kevin Convey (19) had pleaded guilty earlier to third-degree murder in exchange for testifying against the others. In February he had been sentenced to five to 20 years. Thomas Koskovich and Jayson Vreeland were convicted in 1999 of murdering Jeremy Giordano and Giorgio Gallara. Koskovich was sentenced to death, but had the sentence overturned by the New Jersey Supreme Court, and faced a 2nd sentencing trial; Vreeland was sentenced to life.
