Mexican police arrested Jean Baptiste Kingery (40) of the US for smuggling American grenade parts into Mexico for use by the Sinaloa cartel. Kingery had been detained in Arizona in June 2010 and then released, purportedly because officials wanted to use him as an informant or in a sting operation.

Mexican police found a tunnel was found in the border city of Nogales, across the border from Nogales, Arizona. It was presumably used to smuggle people into the US. Police found it acting on information they received after discovering another tunnel in Nogales on Aug. 16.

A power blackout hit the southwest affecting 5 million people in Baja California, southern California, Arizona and parts of Sonora. It was caused by a utility worker making a routine repair in Yuma, Az. Most power was restored within 12 hours.

In Arizona Donald Lapre, a Phoenix-based TV pitchman charged with running a nationwide scheme to sell essentially worthless Internet-based businesses, was found dead in his cell at a Florence facility. The government has said at least 220,000 victims in the scheme were defrauded of nearly $52 million.

Phoenix-based US Airways flight attendant Nick Aaronson (33) was found dead in a Mexico City hotel room while on a layover. Authorities were investigating the death as a homicide.

Arizona law enforcement officials said a massive drug smuggling ring has been broken up. Over the past month 76 people were arrested linked to the Sinaloa drug cartel, which over the last 5 years had generated over $2 billion by smuggling cocaine, heroine and marijuana into the US.

Arizona police arrested Jerice Hunter, the mother of missing Jhessye Shockley (5), on child abuse charges "directly related" to the girl, and said they don't believe they'll find the child alive. Jhessye was last seen Oct. 11 after Hunter said she went out for an errand and left the girl in the care of three older siblings.

In Arizona 5 people were killed in shootings in a home in Gilbert. They included 16-month-old Lily Lynn Mederos, Amber Nieve Mederos (23), Lisa Lynn Mederos (47), Jim Franklin Hiott (24) and Jason Todd Ready (39), a former Marine with ties to neo-Nazi and Minutemen groups. Lisa Mederos was reported to have been Ready's girlfriend. It appeared that Ready, who was running for sheriff in Arizona's Pinal County, killed the others before turning the gun on himself.

In Arizona Michael Martin (53) collapsed and died in court after a jury convicted him of burning down his $3.5 million mansion. An autopsy report found that he had committed suicide by taking cyanide.

The Mexican army found an incomplete tunnel in a Tijuana warehouse with more than 40 tons of marijuana at the entry. The passage extended nearly 400 yards, including more than 100 yards into the United States. It was the second, major incomplete tunnel discovered in the San Diego-Tijuana area in two days and the third along the US-Mexico border since July 9, when a completed passage was found in a vacant strip mall storefront in the southwestern Arizona city of San Luis.

On July 7, 2014, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals said Arizona’s police is discriminatory and ordered the state to issue licenses.

In Arizona US Border Patrol agents in Nogales opened fire on a group of people throwing rocks at agents from across the border. An autopsy showed that Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez (16) was shot at least eight times. In 2014 the mother of the teen sued the agency saying he was walking home with his girlfriend when he was hit in the back by 10 bullets.

The California state Supreme Court issued an order to allow the state’s political watchdog to identify contributors to an Arizona group’s las minute infusion of $11 million to campaigns opposing Gov. In Arizona 19 firefighters of an elite crew fighting a forest fire northwest of Phoenix were overtaken and killed by a fast-moving blaze stoked by hot winds. The Yarnell Hill Fire also destroyed some 200 homes. On Dec 4 a state commission approved a nearly $650,000 fine against the state Forestry Division after investigators found that officials had put protection of property ahead of safety.

In Mississippi a bank robber killed Tupelo police officer Kevin Stauffer (38) and injured another as he escaped. In Dec 28 Arizona police in Phoenix shot and killed Mario Edward Garnett (40) following an attempted bank robbery. He is believed to be the same man accused in the Dec 23 killing of Tupelo police officer Kevin Stauffer.

In Arizona police found Aniarael Macias (13) dead at the home of Connie Villa (35) in Casa Grande. Villa had tried to poison her three other children and had just stabbed her ex-husband who called 911 as he drove to a hospital. Connie Villa was arrested on Dec 29 after being released from a hospital.
