Jimmy Ryce (9) was kidnapped, raped and murdered in south Florida. In 1998 Juan Carlos Chavez, a Cuban ranch hand was convicted. His defense was that he was framed by his bosses into a confession for fear of being deported. The defense held that Edward Sheinhaus, the son of Chavez’s bosses, was the killer. Chavez was executed on Feb 12, 2014.

A 3-year old girl, Stephanie Kuhen, was shot dead in Los Angeles when the car she was riding in driven by Timothy Stone made a wrong turn into a dead-end alley in Cypress Park, and happened on a gang setting. Her 2-year old brother was wounded in the foot. Accused of the murder are Manuel Rosales Jr., Augustin Lizama, Hugo David Gomez, Marcos Antonio Luna and Anthony Gabriel Rodriguez. A 6th defendant, Marvin Pech, is expected to testify for the prosecution.

O.J. Simpson’s jurors stunned the courtroom and the nation by reaching verdicts in the sensational eight-month murder trial in less than four hours. The decision was kept secret until the following day, when it was announced that Simpson had been acquitted. Simpson was acquitted in the double-murder of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

In Mississippi Rhonda Hatten Griffis (28), a mother of two, was found dead at her home in Petal. Larry Matthew Puckett, a local landscaper, was convicted of her murder in 1996 and sentenced to death. Puckett said it was David Griffis who murdered his wife with the club after accusing her of having an affair. Puckett (35) was executed on March 20, 2012.

In California Deborah Sammons (40) was raped and murdered by Robert Bacon. He had been hired to murder Deborah by her husband Charles Sammons, who later pleaded guilty to non-capital murder and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. In 2010 the California state Supreme Court upheld the death penalty for Bacon.

1995 Oct 27
William Kreutzer, US Army sergeant, opened fire on a field of 1300 soldiers at Fort Bragg, NC. He killed a fellow 82nd Airborne soldier, Major Stephen Badger and wounded several others. Defense lawyers in 1996 pleaded that he suffered from depression. He was convicted of pre-meditated murder on 6/11/96. The next day he was sentenced to death. His death sentence was later overturned. In 2009 Kreutzer pleaded guilty under a deal that could get him life in prison at most.

In Kewanee, Ill., Scott English, the boyfriend of Tabitha Pollock, killed Jami Pollock (3) as she and her mother slept. Tabitha Pollock, the mother, was later convicted of 1st degree murder for not preventing the murder and sentenced to 36 years in prison. In 2002 the state Supreme Court overturned the sentence. English was sentenced to life in prison.

In Djibouti the half-burned body of French judge Bernard Borrel was found at the foot of a ravine 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the town of Djibouti. A former French military intelligence officer later testified that Borrel was investigating President Ismael Omar Guelleh, who was then a candidate for the top job.

In Mississippi Patty Milliken (38) disappeared after walking out of the Majik Mart convenience store where she worked to have a cigarette with William Mitchell in Biloxi. Mitchell was convicted of murder in 1998 and was executed on March 22, 2012.

Free-lance photographer Charles Rathbun was booked in Hermosa Beach, Calif., for investigation of murder in the disappearance of model Linda Sobek. Rathbun was later convicted of Sobek's murder.

1995 Dec 4
In Texas Diane Zamora and David Graham, high school sweethearts, killed Adrienne Jones (16). It was alleged that Jones and Graham had had sex and the murder was reported as an appeasement to Zamora. Graham went on to the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs. The murder remained a mystery until Zamora confided her story to classmates at the Annapolis Naval Academy in Sep 1996. Zamora later testified that Graham shot and killed Jones. Zamora was convicted in Feb, 1998, and received a life sentence with possible parole after 40 years. Graham was convicted in July, 1998, and received an automatic life sentence.

Stanley Keith Runcorn (73), a professor in geophysics, was killed by Paul Bradford Cain (26), a kickboxer, at the Hotel San Diego. Cain was convicted in 1997 of first-degree murder.

US paratrooper James N. Burmeister (21) shot and killed Jackie Burden and Michael James. He was convicted on Feb 27, 1997 of 1st degree murder and conspiracy in the hate crime and faced the death penalty. The jury deadlocked 11 to 1 in favor of death so the judge sentenced him to 2 consecutive life terms in prison. He will have to serve at least 50 years before becoming eligible for parole. Malcolm Wright, a fellow soldier, was also charged in the murders and convicted on May 2, 1997.

1995 Dec 20
Three teenagers were found shot through the head on a remote logging road in Lane County, Oregon. One was a 15-year old girl, who was also raped. Later Jonathon Wayne Susbauer, 22, and Conan Wayne Hale, 20, were arrested. Authorities taped a confession by Hale while he confessed to a Roman Catholic priest. Catholic leaders in Portland have requested that the tape be destroyed.

In South Africa supporters of the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party carried out a Christmas massacre where 18 supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) were killed in the KwaZulu-Natal province. 600 members of Inkatha, a Zulu nationalist group, were responsible. In 1998 5 of the 13 men convicted in the massacre were freed from prison.

Robert Silveria, was arrested in Auburn, Ca., by a railroad police officer. He was suspected of being the "Boxcar Killer" responsible for murders in California and 6 other states. In 1998 he pleaded guilty to the 1995 first-degree murder of Charles Randall Boyd at a Kansas state park and was sentenced in Kansas to life in prison.

Marvin and Kay Lichtman were murdered and their 22-room mansion was burned during a robbery in the wealthy Illinois suburb of Barrington Hills. In 2005 Peter Hommerson, a fugitive charged with killing a wealthy Illinois couple, was captured at a Mexican resort after tourists recognized him from a crime watch television program.

Olympic wrestler Dave Schultz was fatally shot at the suburban Philadelphia estate of John E. du Pont; du Pont surrendered 48 hours later. Du Pont was later convicted of third-degree murder but mentally ill; he's serving a 13- to 30-year sentence.

A man invaded a convent in Waterville, Maine, stabbing and beating four nuns, killing two of them with two others injured, including one left in a coma. Mark Bechard was later found not criminally responsible because of mental illness. Bechard, a mentally ill man who dreamed of becoming a Catholic priest burst through the doors of the chapel of Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, went on a rampage, stabbing and stomping elderly nuns.

In California Gunner Lindberg, head of the supremacist gang Insane Criminal Posse, murdered Thien Minh Ly (24) at Tustin high school. It was a racially motivated attack where he stabbed Ly 50 times, slashed his throat and pounded his head. Lindberg was convicted in 1997 and sentenced to death.

In Hanford, Ca., Tracy Rene Conrad (11), went to the Galik home to play with the sons of Duane Galik Sr. Her body was found a month later stuffed in a pottery kiln and sexually abused. Duane Galik Sr. went on trial for the murder in 1997.

Cambodian Dr. Haing S. Ngor (55), academy award winner for the 1984 film "The Killing Fields," was shot and killed in front of his home in Los Angeles. In 1998 three Chinatown gang members, Oriental Lazy Boyz gang, were convicted by separate juries in the murder. Jason Chan (20) was sentenced to life without parole. Tak Sun Tan (21) was sentenced 56 years to life. Indra Lim was sentenced to 26 years to life. In 2004 a judge ruled to overturn the convictions. In 2005 a federal appeals court reinstated the convictions.

Beatrice Abilez Loza (68), a mother of 10, was murdered and sodomized at her home in la Puente, Ca. In 1997 her son, Frank Manuel Abilez, was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder. He died at age 53 while on death row at San Quentin in 2012.

Rejecting an insanity defense, a jury in Dedham, Mass., convicted John C. Salvi III of murdering two women in a pair of attacks at two Boston-area abortion clinics in December 1994. Salvi later committed suicide in his cell.

In Cambodia the Khmer Rouge kidnapped Christopher Howes (37), a mine-clearing expert from Bristol, England, and Huon Huot, his interpreter. In November Howes’ employer paid $120,000 for his release. The two men were killed shortly after their abduction. Their remains were found in 1998. In 2008 a Cambodian court sentenced four former Khmer Rouge rebels each to up to 20 years in prison for their involvement in the murders.

Jaleel Andrabi, a Kashmiri human rights lawyer, disappeared in Srinagar at the height of an anti-India uprising. His body was recovered 19 days later in a local river. He had been shot in the head and his eyes gouged out. Avtar Singh, a major in the Indian army, fled the country after he was accused of killing Andrabi. India called for Singh’s extradition after his location was discovered following his Feb 21, 2011, arrest in California in a domestic violence case.

Anatoly Onoprienko was arrested in western Ukraine. He later admitted to the murder of some 52 people in a serial killing spree from 1989 to 1996 that first came to attention in 1995. He went on trial in 1998. In 1999 the former sailor was sentenced to death.

Walter Petryshyn, a Rutgers Univ. mathematics professor, author of "Generalized Topological Degree and Semilinear Equations," smashed his wife’s skull with 30 blows from a claw hammer in North Brunswick, New Jersey. He had become depressed and paranoid over an error in his book.

In San Diego, Ca., Alzheimer’s researcher, Tsunao Saitoh and his daughter, 13-year-old Loullie, were shot and killed. In 1993 he identified a protein that is deposited in plaques that form in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. In 1995 he learned that the protein was controlled by chromosome 4 and was searching for its exact location when he was killed.

David Boim (17), an American, was standing at a bus stop in the West Bank with fellow yeshiva students when two Palestinian terrorists drove by in a car, shot him in the head, and killed him. In 2004 a US court awarded his parents $156 million against US-based Muslim activists. In 2007 a federal appeals court overturned the judgement.

Michael Lyons, (8) of Yuba City, Ca., was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered. Robert Rhoades (45) was arrested the next day near the boy’s body. In 1998 Rhoades was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death. In 2007 Rhoades faced another trial for the 1984 rape and murder of Julie Connell (18) in Hayward, Ca.

The Armed Islamic Group said that it had killed 7 French Trappist monks who were kidnapped two months ago from the Notre Dame de l’Atlas monastery at Tibhirine near Medea on Mar 27. Only their decapitated heads were found. In 2002 John W. Kister authored "The Monks of Tibhirine." In 2010 this story was covered in the French film “Of Gods and Men.”

The bodies of Julianne Williams (24) and Laura Winans (26) were found in Shenandoah National Park, Va., a week after they were last seen alive. Their hands were bound and their throats were slashed. Darrel David Rice was indicted for the murders along with hate charges on Apr 10, 2002.

In Nigeria Kudirat Abiola, wife of imprisoned opposition leader Moshood Abiola, was shot and killed by 6 gunmen near her home in Lagos. In 2011 Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, right-hand man of dictator Sani Abacha, faced trial for ordering a security agent to kill Kudirat. Al-Mustapha denied taking part in her machine-gun killing, saying he was tortured into a false confession.
