Joann Hobson (16) of Stockton, Ca., went missing. Her remains were found in 2012 in a compacted well in Linden, Ca., and attributed to Speed Freak Killers Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog.

The body of Betty Stuart (22) was found at Aquatic Park in Berkeley, Ca. In 2008 prosecutors using DNA evidence said Anthony McKnight (54), already in prison for rape and attempted murder, was responsible for her murder. He had been arrested in 1986 and was already serving a 63 year sentence for the rape and murder of 3 other women. In 2008 McKnight, a former sailor, was convicted on an additional 5 counts of first-degree murder.

In SF, Ca., Barbara Martz (28) was raped and stabbed to death when she walked in on a robbery at her Potrero Hill home. In 2007 DNA evidence linked John Davis, already in prison at Pelican Bay, to her murder. On Aug 27 Davis was convicted of murder. On Dec 17 he sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Dian Fossey (53), American zoologist who had studied gorillas in the wild (Gorillas in the Mist), was murdered in Rwanda. Her body was found the next day. Wayne Richard McGuire, a doctoral candidate working with Fossey, was later found guilty in absentia in Rwanda. A native tracker was also charged and died in jail. McGuire claimed total innocence.

Palestinian guerrillas opened fire inside the Rome and Vienna airports; a total of twenty people were killed, including five of the attackers, who were slain by police and security personnel. Abu Nidal was considered responsible. President Reagan blamed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

In Santa Barbara James Tramel (17) and an accomplice were charged with stabbing to death Michael Stephenson (29), a homeless man, in what was described as a thrill crime. Tramel, who did not do the stabbing, was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, where he became an ordained Episcopalian priest. In 2006 Gov. Schwarzenegger pardoned Tramel.

Brenda O’Connor (20), her husband Lonnie Bond and their baby son disappeared. A video made by Leonard Lake and Charles Ng later showed her bound to a chair at his hideaway near Wilseyville in Calaveras Ct., Ca. Charles Ng was arrested in Canada for killing a dozen people in a hideaway in the Sierra Nevada foothills in 1984-1985. He fought extradition for 6 years but was finally returned to California by a Canadian Supreme Court order.

In Baltimore Flint Gregory Hunt murdered policeman Vincent Adolfo after he was stopped in a stolen car. He first chose the gas chamber for his execution, but as it approached in 1997 he changed his mind to lethal injection.

In Florida Daniel Remeta killed an Ocala convenience store clerk and went on a four state crime and murder spree in which 5 people were killed. He was electrocuted in 1998. Remeta had the mental age of a child and ordered snow cones for his final meal.

In Texas John Kilheffer was killed by two hitchhikers. In 1997 Irineo Tristan Montoya was executed for holding Kilheffer down while Juan Villavicencio stabbed him 22 times. Villavicencio testified against Montoya and avoided the death sentence.

In Virginia Helen Schartner was murdered. Joseph O'Dell III was tried and convicted for the murder and was executed in 1997. He pleaded innocence right to the moment of death and married Lori Urs just before his execution.

In Louisiana John Thompson was convicted of murder after prosecutors hid a blood test that would have cleared him of a prior conviction for armed robbery. A deathbed confession later cleared Thompson, who ending up spending nearly 14 years on death row.

Sherri Rasmussen (29) was beaten, shot and killed at her condominium in Los Angeles. In 2009 Police detective Stephanie Lazarus (49) was charged with the murder following DNA evidence linking her to the murder of her former boyfriend’s wife. On May 11, 2012, Lazarus (52) was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison.

Olof Palme, Swedish Prime Minister (1969-76, 82-86), was shot to death in central Stockholm. In 1996 South African former police officer Eugene de Kock said that Craig Williamson, a South African spy, was involved in the murder. In 1997 lawyer Pelle Svensson said that his client, Lars Tingstrom, wrote a statement on his deathbed in prison in 1993 that he had committed the killing. The family was convinced that Christer Pettersson, a drug addict and alcoholic, was the killer. In 1999 Abdullah Ocalan in Turkey suggested that a rival PKK organization killed Olof Palme.

Aleta Carol Bunch (16) was kidnapped, raped and murdered in Augusta, Georgia, by Alexander E. Williams IV (17). Williams was convicted and sentenced to death. In 2000 the state Supreme Court stayed the execution to see if electrocution violated the state constitution. Williams, a chronic paranoid schizophrenic, was kept synthetically sane with forced medication. His execution, set for Feb 20, was stayed on Feb 19. Williams was granted clemency Feb 25 and his sentence was commuted to life in prison.

Dimitris Angelopoulos (79), a Greek industrialist, was killed by Nov. 17 militants. In 2003 Patroklos Tselentis testified that he drove the getaway motorcycle.

Phillip Hallford forced his daughter (15) to lure her boyfriend Eddie Shannon (16) to an isolated area in Daly County, Alabama, where he shot and killed the boy and threw his body off a bridge. Melinda Hallford was pregnant at the time of the killing and had been sexually abused by her father. In 2010 Hallford (63) was executed.

Ranch foreman James Hazelton (28) and brother-in-law Peter Sparagana (23) were murdered near Huntsville, Texas, after they interrupted a burglary. Gary Johnson (59) was later convicted of the murders and was executed on Jan 12, 2010.

In North Carolina Harold Gentry’s gunshot-ridden body was found sprawled on the floor of the home he shared with his wife, Betty Neumar. She collected at least $20,000 in life insurance, plus other benefits from the military and sold the couple's house and other items. In 2008 Neumar (76) was charged with hiring a hit man to gun him down. After arresting her, authorities realized that five times since the 1950s, she was married, and each union ended with the death of her husband.

Gary Lee Davis (1944-1997) and his wife, Rebecca, abducted, raped and killed Virginia May (32) in Byers, Colorado. After exhausting all appeals he was executed by lethal injection on Oct 13, 1997. Rebecca was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Flozelle Woodmore (18), shot and killed her abusive boyfriend, Clifton Morrow, with a .357 magnum in the presence of their 2-year-old son in Los Angeles. In 2007 Gov. Schwarzenegger, said he no longer oppose her parole.

Postal employee Patrick Henry Sherrill (44) went on a deadly rampage at a post office in Edmond, Okla., shooting 14 fellow workers to death before killing himself. This incident is credited with inspiring the American phrase "going postal".

In the so-called "preppie murder" case, 18-year-old Jennifer Levin was found strangled in New York's Central Park; Robert Chambers later pleaded guilty to manslaughter for strangling Jennifer Levin during a tryst in Central Park. Chambers was released from prison in 2003 after serving a 15-year sentence. He owed the Levin family $25 million from a wrongful death suit [see Mar 25, 1988]. In 2007 Chambers was arrested for dealing cocaine. He pleaded guilty and faced another long term in prison.

1986 Sep 3
In Connecticut Barbara Pelkey (30) of Wallingford, a New Haven suburb, was raped and murdered. Kenneth Ireland (20) was convicted in 1989 and sentenced to 50 years in prison. In 2009 Ireland was released from prison and granted a new trial after DNA testing showed he could not have committed the crime.

In Texas Jonathan Nobles stabbed to death Mitzi Johnson-Nalley (21) and Kelly Farquhar (24). Nobles was high on drugs at the time and during imprisonment offered to donate his organs, but the Texas system did not allow organs from death row inmates to be harvested. He was executed Oct 7, 1998.

In Ohio University of Akron students Dawn McCreery (20) and Wendy Offredo (21) were sexually assaulted and killed. Richard Cooey (19) and a co-defendant (17) were convicted for the sexual assaults and slayings. The co-defendant was sentenced to life in prison because of his age. Cooey was executed in 2008.

Annette Thur (17) of Santa Cruz County was kidnapped, raped and killed following a party in Boulder Creek. A tourist found her body off Skyline Drive in San Mateo County. In 2012 DNA evidence linked registered sex offender John William Kelley (49) of Placerville to her murder and he was arrested.

Army cook Ronald A. Gray raped and killed Army Pvt. Laura Lee Vickery-Clay of Fayetteville. She was shot four times with a .22-caliber pistol that Gray confessed to stealing. She suffered blunt force trauma over much of her body. Gray (42) was convicted in connection with a spree of four murders and eight rapes in the Fayetteville, NC, area between April 1986 and January 1987 while he was stationed at Fort Bragg. He was convicted at Fort Bragg in April 1988 and unanimously sentenced to death.

In San Diego Cara Evelynn Knott was strangled to death by an on-duty highway patrol officer. Officer Craig Alan Peyer was convicted of the murder, the first ever homicide conviction of an on duty CHP.

In Florida Robert Rozier, a former NFL football player, changed his name to Neariah Israel and murdered 8 people to prove himself to a sect of Yahweh Ben Yahweh. He testified against the sect, which was blamed for at least 23 killings and a series of firebombings. He was freed after 10 years in prison. In 1999 he was arrested for bouncing check in California and subject to the "three strikes" sentencing law.

Michele Lee Dorr (6) vanished. Her body was found in a park outside of Washington DC in 2000. Hadden Clark (47) was convicted for her murder in Oct 1999 and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The bodies of Tony (48) and Michael (41) Spilotro were found buried in an Indiana cornfield. Tony “The Ant” Spilotro was a top mob figure in Las Vegas. In 2005 prosecutors indicted 11 Chicago mob figures for at least 18 murders, including the Spilotros.

Henrietta Briones (26) of Compton, Ca., shot and killed Larry Daniels, her former live-in boyfriend, following abuse and threats to her life. She was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced 17 years to life in prison. Domestic violence became admissible evidence in 1992.

In California 5 women were murdered in the Central Valley along I-5. In 2008 Roger Reese Kibbe (68) was charged with the 5 murders along with a 1977 murder of a woman from Walnut Creek. He was already serving a life sentence for the murder of a West Sacramento prostitute, whose body was found in 1987.

In Chico, Ca., Dr. William Chiapella (67) and his wife Katherine were beaten and stabbed to death in their home. In 1989 Steven Crittenden (21) was convicted of their murder and sentenced to death. In 2013 his conviction and sentence were tossed out because prosecutors had dismissed the only African American in the jury pool.

Lita McClinton Sullivan was shot to death at her home in Atlanta by a man with roses posing as a delivery person. Florida millionaire James Vincent Sullivan paid a man $25,000 to kill Lita McClinton Sullivan to avoid losing property in a divorce. In 2003 a Thai court ruled to extradite Sullivan (61). In 2004 James Vincent Sullivan arrived in Atlanta, Ga., for prosecution. In 2006 he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Peggy Hettrick (37) in Fort Collins, Colorado, was murdered. Timothy Masters (15) was convicted and sentenced to life in 1999 for the crime. He served nine and a half years of a life sentence for the murder until DNA evidence from the body in 2008 was found to match the victim's ex-boyfriend and not the Masters.

Daniel Morgan (37), a private detective, was murdered with an ax in his head outside a London pub. At the time of his death, it is believed Morgan was about to expose a south London drug network, possibly involving corrupt police officers. In 2008 6 men wee arrested for involvement in the killing of Morgan.

Frances Newton (22) allegedly killed her husband and 2 children in Houston to gain insurance benefits. According to a reprieve petition, Adrian Newton was a drug user and drug seller and there was evidence that some sort of trouble in this regard was brewing before the murder. In 2005 she was executed in Huntsville, Texas, the 1st black woman to be executed by the state since the Civil War.

Ali Mecili, a lawyer active in Algeria's human rights movement, was killed by three gunshots in the foyer of his Paris apartment. Colleagues accused the Algerian government of involvement. In 2008 Algerian diplomat Mohamed Ziane Hasseni was arrested at an airport in the French port city of Marseille, based on an international arrest warrant. A Paris judge had signed the orders for the arrest of Hassani and the suspected killer, Abdelmalek Amellouet, in December last year.

1987 Apr 22
Joe Hunt, leader of a social and investment group called the "Billionaire Boys Club," was convicted by a jury in Santa Monica, Calif., of murdering Ron Levin in 1984, a con man whose body had not been found. Hunt was sentenced to life in prison. In 1992 Hunt was also tried for the 1984 killing of Hedayat Eslaminia, but a hung jury forced a mistrial.

Patricia Lopez (9) disappeared after leaving school in Santa Ana, Ca. Her body was found 2 days later bludgeoned to death in a feeder tunnel of the Santa Ana riverbed. In 2007 DNA evidence identified her brother, Rosendo Lopez (42), as the murderer.

In Warwick, RI, Craig Price (13) crept across his neighbor's yard, broke into a little brown house on Inez Avenue and stabbed Rebecca Spencer 58 times. She was a 27-year-old mother of two. On Sep 1, 1989, he butchered Joan Heaton (39) with kitchen knives she had bought earlier that day. The bodies of her daughters, Jennifer 10, and Melissa 8, were found in pools of blood, pieces of knives broken off in their bones; Jennifer had been stabbed 62 times. Price was scheduled to be released in 1994 but was sentenced to 15 years, seven to serve and eight suspended, following contempt charges and belligerent statements. Fights in prison added more time to his sentence. As of 2007 Price's scheduled release date was February 2022. He will be 48.

Two teenagers in Alexander, Arkansas, Kevin Ives and Don Henry were run over by a train. Fahmy Malak, the medical examiner of Gov. Clinton, ruled the Aug 23 deaths of the teenagers as accidental. Malak was investigated and cleared of improprieties. Later investigations indicated that they were murdered prior to being run over.

In South Korea 33 followers of a cult were found bound, gagged and murdered in a factory in Yongin. Authorities said the tourist souvenir factory was owned by Park Soon Ja (48), the cult leader who was called "Benevolent Mother" by her followers.

In Oklahoma Michael Houghton (27) and Laura Lee Sanders (22) were kidnapped from behind a Tulsa bar, stuffed into a car trunk and taken to a rural area where the car was set afire. Scott Allen Hain was executed for the murders on Apr 3, 2003. Hain was 17 in 1987 and claimed to be under the influence of Robert Lambert.

Rosellina Lo Bue (18), a photo store clerk, was stabbed 52 times and died on the floor of the Photo Drive-Up store in San Jose, Ca. Eric Chatman fled to Texas, but was arrested for the murder in April, 1990. Chatman’s wife, who also worked in the store, had left earlier in the day and was replaced by Lo Bue. In 2006 the state Supreme Court upheld Chapman’s death sentence
