2001 Jan 10
In Nevada County Scott Harlan Thorpe (40) killed 3 people, including Laura Wilcox (19), and wounded 2 others at the Nevada County Behavioural Health clinic before he was apprehended by police near Smartville. Thorpe had refused to take medication and could not be force to do so under the 1967 Lanterman-Petris-Short state law. In 2000 a bill AB1421 named “Laura’s Law,” was pending to address the issue. In 2002 Gov. Gray Davis signed Laura’s Law allowing for court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment or forced anti-psychotics in most cases.

2001 Jan 19
Former NFL player Rae Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy and two other charges in the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend. Carruth was later sentenced to a minimum of 18 years, 11 months in prison and a maximum of 24 years, four months.

A jury in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., found 13-year-old Lionel Tate guilty of first-degree murder in the death of a 6-year-old family friend. Tate had said he accidentally killed the girl while imitating moves by pro wrestlers.

2001 Jan 26
Diane Whipple (33), Lacrosse coach, died after being mauled by 2 dogs in her San Francisco Pacific Heights apartment. The dogs, under the control of Marjorie Knoller, were later found to be owned by 2 Aryan Brotherhood prison gang members and kept by attorneys Robert Noel (59) and Marjorie Knoller (45). A few days later Noel and Knoller adopted Paul Schneider (38) in SF family court. Bane, one of the Presa Canario dogs, was destroyed following the attack on Whipple. Hera, the 2nd dog, was impounded. Knoller and Noel were indicted for murder and manslaughter on Mar 27. Hera was put to death Jan 30, 2001. Knoller was paroled Jan 1, 2004. In 2005 a state appeals court reinstated a murder conviction against Marjorie Knoller. Knoller was again jailed in 2008 after a judge reinstated her murder conviction. On Sep 22 Knoller was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

2001 Jan 27
In New Hampshire 2 Dartmouth professors, Half and Susanne Zantop, were found slain. James Parker 16) and Robert Tulloch (17), suspects in the murder, were arrested in Indiana Feb 19. Parker pleaded guilty in 2001 and agreed to testify against Tulloch. Parker pleaded guilty to being an accomplice to second-degree murder and is serving a sentence of 25 years to life. Tuloch pleaded guilty in 2002 to murder and conspiracy and is serving a sentence of life without parole.

2001 Feb 3
Benjamin Varner, a freshman at Gallaudet Univ. in Washington DC, was found dead with his throat slashed and face mutilated. Police later arrested Joseph Mesa Jr. (20), a freshman student from Guam, for the murder of Varner and Eric Plunkett in Sep, 2000. [see Sep 28, 2000]

In Illinois William D. Baker (66), shot and killed 4 employees at the Navistar factory in Melrose Park and then shot and killed himself. He was about to begin serving a 5-month sentence for conspiring to steal engines and parts.

2001 Feb 6
Gus Boulis (51), founder of the Miami Subs restaurant chain and SunCruz gambling cruises, was shot and killed in Fort Lauderdale. In 2006 it was reported that Boulis was killed by John Gurino, a man with mob connections, who was himself killed by a business partner in 2003.

2001 Feb 17
Lynsie Ekelund (20), a Fullerton College student, disappeared after going to a club with Christopher McAmis. In 2010 her body was found in a canyon north of Los Angeles. McAmis had used a tractor to dig her grave after he killed her during an attempted rape.

Ashley Ellerin (22), former girlfriend of actor Ashton Kutcher, was found dead in her Hollywood Hills home. In 2008 police matched DNA linking Michael Gargiulo (32), an air conditioning repairman, to her murder and to another fatal stabbing of a Monterey Park woman in 2005. They also suspect Gargiulo in the 1993 killing of a high school girl in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, where Gargiulo lived at the time. Tricia Pacaccio, a senior at Glenbrook South High School, was found stabbed to death on her front doorstep, clutching her door key.

2001 Mar 9
A judge in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., sentenced 14-year-old Lionel Tate to life in prison for the 1999 killing of Tiffany Eunick, a 6-year old girl. Tate, who had been convicted of first-degree murder, said he was imitating pro-wrestling moves. Tate's first-degree murder conviction and sentence were later overturned; he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a new sentence of probation, but is now accused of violating that probation.

In Costa Rica Shannon Martin (23), a student from Topeka, Kan., was stabbed to death, after she left a nightclub in Golfito, 100 miles south of San Jose. In 2003 Kattia Cruz, 28, and Luis Alberto Castro, 38, were found guilty of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison for the killing.

Federal authorities confirmed that remains found on a Texas ranch were those of missing atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair and two of her relatives. David Waters, the key suspect in the slayings, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on a federal extortion charge in connection with the case.

Michelle Curran (16) was reported missing in Las Vegas. She was kidnapped as she hitchhiked, sexually abused for three weeks, and then shot in the head. In 2006 Michael Thorton (50) and Janeen Snyder (26) were both found guilty of murder, rape with a foreign object, and burglary. The pair were sentenced to death.

A young girl’s decapitated body was found near an intersection in Kansas City, Mo. In 2005 “Precious Doe” was identified as Erica Michelle Marie Green. Her mother and stepfather were charged with murder. In 2009 a park was dedicated in her honor.

2001 Apr 30
Chandra Levy (24), an intern from Modesto, Ca., was last seen at a health club near her apartment in Washington, D.C. On July 5 the aunt of Chandra Levy reported that her niece told her of a relationship with US Rep. Gary Condit before she disappeared. Levy’s remains were found May 22, 2002, in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC. In 2009 Ingmar Guandique (27), a Salvadoran immigrant already serving a 10-year sentence for attacking 2 women in the same park, was charged in her murder. In 2010 Scott Higham and Sari Horwitz authored “Finding Chandra: The True Washington Murder Mystery.” In Nov 22, 2010, a jury found Guandique guilty of 2 counts of 1st d2gree murder. He face life in prison.

2001 May 4
Bonny Lee Bakley (44), the wife of actor Robert Blake (67), died from a bullet wound to the head as she sat in a car near a restaurant in Los Angeles. Blake and his bodyguard, Earle Caldwell, were arrested April 18, 2002, in connection with Bakley's death. Blake, accused of the killing, was acquitted in a 2005 criminal trial but was found liable by a civil jury and ordered to pay damages.

2001 May 21
The body of Quetzalcoatl Alba (15) was found in a storage room in the carport area of the Park Plaza Drive apartment complex in Daly City, Ca. Suspects Carlos Maldonado Erick Morales Murder denied involvement and left the area. In 2007 police found evidence of the crime and tracked down Carlos Maldonado in Miami. He attempted to escape police on arrival at the SF Airport and jumped a railing plunging 25 feet to the arrival area of the airport, suffering serious, but non-life threatening injuries. In 2009 police arrested Erick Morales (25) in NY state and planned to extradite him to San Mateo.

In the USA Virgin Islands police Corporal Wendell Williams (49) disappeared after ending his midnight shift. On Feb 10, 2012, a team of 70 police officers arrested five suspects in the case, including one in Georgia with the help of federal agents.

2001 Jun 20
Andrea Yates (36) of Houston, Texas, drowned her 5 children, ages 6 months to 7 years, at her home near the Johnson Space Center. Yates had been under medication for post-partum depression. In 2002 a jury found Yates guilty of capital murder and sentenced her to life in prison. Her conviction was overturned in 2005 by an appeals court which ruled a prosecution expert witness gave false testimony at her trial. In 2006 a jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity.

The British government announced that Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, two teen-agers who were 10 years old when they kidnapped and killed a toddler (1993), had been granted parole.

In Puerto Rico Parmenio Medina (62), a Colombian-born journalist, was gunned down in his car. He ran a radio program called "La Patada," or "The Kick," which denounced fraud at a religious radio station. In 2007 a court convicted Omar Chaves, a businessman, of ordering the murder of the journalist. Chaves also got a 12-year prison sentence on a fraud count. His partner, Father Minor de Jesus Calvo, was acquitted of the killing, but was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 15 years in jail.

In Australia British backpacker Peter Falconio (28) was murdered and his girlfriend, Joanne Lees. Murdoch was assaulted while they backpacking in the Outback. In 2005 Bradley John Murdoch (47), was convicted and given a mandatory life sentence.

Jeanine Sanchez Harms was last seen alive in Campbell, Ca. In 2004 San Jose architect Maurice Xavier Nasmeh was arrested for her murder. In 2007 a judge dismissed murder charges against Nasmeh due to lack of evidence. On Jan 15, 2011, Wayne Sanchez (52), the brother of Harms, shot and killed Nasmeh at the El Paseo de Saratoga Shopping Center, and then killed himself. In August, 2011, evidence linked Nasmeh to the murder of Harms and the case was closed.

2001 Jul
Michele Breault (38) was stabbed and battered to death with a hammer in the Stanford Hotel on Kearny Street in SF. In 2006 David Cooper was sentenced to life without parole for the murder. His girlfriend, Debra Soler, was also convicted of murder but faced a new trial. In their 2004 trial each blamed the other for the murder.

2001 Aug 20
Near Sacramento, Ca., Nikolay Soltys (27), a Ukrainian immigrant, stabbed to death his pregnant wife and 4 other relatives including 2 young cousins. He fled the area with his 3-year-old son. The body of Sergey Soltys (3) was found the next day in a blood-soaked carton in Placer County. Soltys was caught in his mother’s backyard near Sacramento Aug 30. Soltys committed suicide Feb 13, 2002.

Nikolay Soltys was captured hiding under a desk in his mother's back yard in Citrus Heights, Calif., after a ten-day nationwide manhunt for the Ukrainian immigrant accused of butchering six relatives. Soltys committed suicide in his jail cell in February. [see Aug 20]

In Iowa Leticia Aguilar (31) was found dead with her 5 children at her home in Sioux City. A 7th victim, Ronal Fish (58) was also found. Adam Matthew Moss (24) was arrested the next day and charged in the murders. Moss pleaded guilty on Sep 25 and was sentenced to 7 consecutive life terms.

In Mexico Maria de los Angeles Tames, attorney and daughter of a former senator, was killed. On Mar 5, 2002, Juan Antonio Dominguez, mayor of Atizapan, was arrested in connection with the slaying of the city council member, who had planned to reveal evidence of corruption and drug trafficking. On Apr 10, 2002 Dominguez and his former chief of staff Daniel Garcia were charged with masterminding the murder.

In Sacramento Joseph Ferguson (20), a suspended security guard, killed a 5th victim in 24 hrs. He shot himself to death the next day following a police chase and shootout that injured 2.

In Switzerland nurse Roger Andermatt (32) was reported to have confessed to killing of 27 elderly and ailing patients over a 6-year period (1995-2001). In 2005 he was sentenced to life in prison for killing 22 elderly nursing home residents.

In Northern Ireland Martin O’Hagan (51), a Catholic journalist, was killed in a driveby shooting in Lurgan. O’Hagan had written exposes of Protestant extremists and their criminal activities. In 2008 police charged 3 suspected members of the outlawed Protestant paramilitary group, the Loyalist Volunteer Force, with the murder.

In Texas Mark Stroman (b.1969), in the wake of 9/11, went on a shooting spree targeting people of Middle Eastern descent killing 2 people and wounding a third. The victims were from South Asia. Stroman was later convicted and sentenced to death. He was executed on July 20, 2011.

Robert Durst failed to appear for a court hearing in the dismemberment death of Morris Black (71) in Galveston, Texas. Durst was also a suspect in the Dec, 2000, shooting death of author Susan Berman. In 1982 Kathleen Durst (29) had disappeared after spending a weekend at the family cottage in South Salem. Robert Durst, her husband, reported her missing Feb 5. Durst was arrested Nov 30, 2001, in Bethlehem, Pa., for shoplifting. A Texas jury acquitted Durst of Black's murder in 2003.

2001 Oct 17
Rehavam Zeevi, Israeli tourist minister, was shot dead at the Hyatt Regency in East Jerusalem. The PFLP claimed responsibility and Yasser Arafat promised to hunt down the perpetrators. Hambi Quran, Basel al-Asmar, Ahmed Gholmy and Majdi Rimawi were later convicted for the murder. Ahmed Saadat, head of the radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, was imprisoned in Jericho. In 2007 Hamdi Quran was sentenced to 100 years in prison for gunning down the minister as well as bombing and shooting attacks against Israelis. In 2008 Bassel Asmar was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, attempted murder and belonging to a terror organization.

In Fort Worth, Texas, Chante Jawan Mallard (25), a nurse's aide, ran into Gregory Biggs (37), a homeless man, after a night of partying. Biggs was left to die in the windshield. In 2003 Mallard was convicted of murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison.

In California Jeffrey Fontana (24), a rookie police officer, was shot and killed during an apparent traffic stop in San Jose’s Almaden Valley neighborhood. DeShawn Lee Campbell (22) was suspected in the murder. Campbell was caught Nov 7. In 2009 Campbell, a mentally disabled man, was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

2001 Nov 6
Authorities in Ciudad Juarez found the bodies of 3 young women. 5 more bodies were found the next day. Mexican authorities later built a somber memorial of concrete benches, a circular water fountain also made of concrete and a cement plaque with the names of the eight victims. The families of three of the women appealed in 2003 for the court, which is a body of the Organization of American States, to take up the case. On Nov 7, 2011, Mexico's government publicly apologized for failing to prevent the killings of the three women and for the negligence of officials in investigating the crimes.

2001 Nov 17
In SF Hunter McPherson (27) was shot and killed on Potrero Hill’s Mariposa St. during a robbery as he returned home with a girlfriend. He was the son of state Sen. Bruce McPherson. Clifton Terrell Jr. (18) and Dwayne Curtis Reed (22) were later charged in the murder. In 2005 Terrell was convicted of 1st degree murder and robbery. Reed was freed in 2005 following a plea bargain in which he agreed to testify against Terrell. In Oct 2005 Reed killed a man in Belmont.

Mathew Hardman (17) killed widow Mabel Leyshon (90) at her home in the north Wales town of Llanfairpwll. Prosecutors later said he wanted to be a vampire. In 2002 Hardman was convicted of fatally stabbing Leyshon, cutting out her heart and drinking her blood.

In Pensacola, Fla., Terry Lee King was murdered and his house set afire. His 2 sons, Derek (14) and Alex (13) confessed to the murder, but later said Rick Chavis (40), a local handyman, killed the father and had gotten the boys to take the blame. Derek and Alex were convicted of 2nd degree murder on Sep 6, 2002. Rick Chavis was acquitted. Derek was sentenced to 8 years in prison and Alex was sentenced to 7 years.

2001 Nov 30
Gary Leon Ridgway (b.1949) was arrested in connection with 4 of 7 Green River serial killings in Washington state. Four murders were linked to him through DNA and three through paint he used at his job. In 2003 he pleaded guilty to 48 counts of aggravated murder, although the estimates ran much higher. On December 18, 2003, King County Superior Court Judge Richard Jones sentenced Ridgway to 48 life sentences with no possibility of parole and one life sentence, to be served consecutively.

In Georgia, former DeKalb County Sheriff Sidney Dorsey and two other men were arrested and charged with murder in the slaying of Sheriff-elect Derwin Brown, who had defeated Dorsey in a bitter runoff election. Dorsey was later convicted and sentenced to life in prison; the two other men were acquitted of murder in a separate trial.

In South Africa Marike de Klerk (64), former wife of former Pres. F.W. de Klerk, was found stabbed and strangled in her luxury apartment near Cape Town. Police arrested Luyanda Mboniswa (21), a security guard, on Dec 5. The guard confessed Dec 7. In 2003 DNA evidence linked him to the murder.

Sir Peter Blake (53) of New Zealand, 2-time America’s Cup winner, was killed on the research vessel Seamaster by gunmen at Macapa, Brazil, near the mouth of the Amazon. 7 men were arrested 2 days later and an 8th was still sought. The final 2 suspects were arrested Dec 9.

In Indiana Robert L. Wissman, an employee of the Nu-Wood Decorative Millwork plant on the edge of Goshen killed manager Greg Oswald, wounded 6 others, and then killed himself. A love triangle was later aid to be the cause.

Christian Michael Longo (27) killed his wife and 3 children. The bodies of Mary Jane Longo and 2-year-old daughter were found in an inlet along the central Oregon coast a week after the bodies of 2 other Longo children were found. Longo was arrested in Mexico Jan 13. Longo was convicted and sentenced to death Apr 16, 2003.

Lawrence Singleton (74), rapist, died at a Florida prison hospital where he was awaiting execution for a 1997 murder. Singleton had raped Mary Vincent (15) in 1978 and chopped off her forearms. He was paroled in 1987.

In South Carolina Christopher Pittman (12) killed his grandparents with a shotgun and then torched their rural home. He later blame the anti-depressant zoloft for his actions. In 2005 he was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
