Heavy clashes between Iraqi soldiers and gunmen in downtown Baghdad left 11 people wounded. Provincial police in Ramadi confirmed that gunmen had killed a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party. Gunmen kidnapped Ahmed al-Sammarai, the head of Iraq's Olympic committee, and more than a dozen employees storming a sports conference in Baghdad. The kidnappers wore camouflage Iraqi police uniforms and security guards outside the meeting said they did not interfere because they thought the gunmen were legitimate law enforcement.
