Russian leader Boris Yeltsin, Ukrainian Pres. Leonid Kravchuk, and Belarus Pres. Stanislav Shushkevich (1934-2022) met at a hunting lodge in Belarus to proclaim the Soviet Union null and void and to form a loose Commonwealth of Independent States. They declared the Soviet national government dead, forging a new alliance to be known as the Commonwealth of Independent States; the declaration later became known as the "Belavezha Accords".
